Perennial and Bulb Care

Perennial Flower Gardens and Spring Planted Bulbs

Maintaining beautiful flower gardens is a on going task. You will continually be working on or in your flower gardens for as long as you have them. Some flower gardens are lower maintenance than others. Some of that depends on what you are looking for, but there will always be something to do.

* Early spring is a good time to divide and transplant, in you flower garden depending on your region, if the soil isn't too wet. This will give your existing perennial flowers and bulbs extra room to get bigger and healthier.

* Mulch early bulbs especially if you live in less temperate areas where freezing temperatures hang on. The Freezing thawing process early in the spring can be hard on many of your bulbs. A little extra mulch in the flower garden helps to keep the temperature more constant for a few more day’s until the danger of late frost passes.

* Dahlia tubers stored last fall can be started indoors late in the month if you have room. Lay the tubers on a bed of sand and begin watering. (Avoid over watering and too much warmth.) Move them to the flower garden after the last frost date.

* Prune roses just before they start to bud out.

* If you like, dig out clumps of violets in the flower garden to bring indoors. Remember
to keep them cool .
